U.S. lawyer, government official, diplomat and son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. From 1933 to 1939, Sayre served as Assistant Secretary of State under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From September 1936 until summer 1939, Alger Hiss worked as Sayre’s assistant. From 1939 to 1947, Sayre was the United States’ High Commissioner to the Philippines. From 1947 to 1952, he was the U.S. representative to the United Nations Trusteeship Council.
